For thirty years we told ourselves computing was weightless. Then frontier models showed up. A model isn't an idea. It's steel, copper, silicon and power. Training one burns through the electricity of a mid-sized city.
So the premise is simple: whoever owns the energy owns the intelligence. Chips can be bought. Talent can be hired. Weights can be copied overnight. A gigawatt of firm American power can't be. It has to be drilled, piped and burned here.
The line from a prompt to a pumpjack is shorter than people think. A request lands in a hall in Texas. Behind the wall is a substation, then a turbine, then a pipeline, then a rig crew.
Oil isn't just the fuel. It's the material. Transformer steel, board resin, coolant, conduit — all of it petroleum. AI is the most oil-hungry idea we've ever had.
02 — Energy
Energy independence wasn't wished into being. It was drilled. Shale made the US the largest crude producer on earth, and that's the quiet reason a training run that's impossible elsewhere is merely expensive here.
Intermittent power can't train a model. Ninety straight days across tens of thousands of chips needs power that doesn't negotiate with the weather. Turbines on American pipelines do. The frontier gets built where the molecules are.


03 — Compute
The new industrial map follows the pipelines. Permian. Appalachia. The Gulf Coast. Developers used to shop for fiber. Now they shop for fuel.
It works both ways. Producers get a buyer that never sleeps. Operators get power in eighteen months instead of eight years. Gas that once burned off into the sky becomes inference.
And demand keeps climbing. Reasoning costs more than chat. Agents run all day. Video multiplies everything. Nobody calling a plateau is watching closely.
04 — The Bottleneck
America isn't short on ambition. It's short on electrons. One frontier campus can pull more than a gigawatt — a small city, landing on a single substation.
Chips get better every two years. Transformers are backordered. Interconnection queues run for years. Transmission lines take a decade. That gap is the real risk to American AI, and almost nobody prices it.
